More FCC intrigue

USA Today: FCC’s Powell likely to fail in attempt to deregulate Bells

So, instead of a complex decision misread has a slamdunk victory for the Bell Companies, we’ll get a complex decision misread as a victory for their competitors. The Bells will do what they were going to do anyway, but they will whine even more that regulation is killing the telecom sector.

What’s surprising in all this is how Powell failed to get a majority to support his position. He’s been working on these rule changes for two years, and seemingly has more political capital than any FCC Chairman in years. Either Powell simply ignored the home front, or Karl Rove wants to make Kevin Martin the FCC’s Bill Frist.
