Balancing centralization and decentralization

Mitch Kapor: "I must confess to a long-standing personal disposition in favor of decentralization." This comment comes in the course of explaining that potential customers are demanding that Chandler be able to integrate with centralized resources. Mitch is onto something importnat. Decentralization is the general direction of technology-driven industries, and it provides many benefits. But reality is not so pure. The general path toward decentralization will include many cases of centralization, or at least coexistence with centralized systems.
