Now it's dead

Napster appears headed for liquidation, after a court blocked Bertelsmann’s acquisition of its assets in bankruptcy. Some stats from ComScore to mourn its passing:

“Napster — once the fast growing consumer software application comScore Media Metrix ever tracked — peaked in February 2001 with 13.6 million U.S. home users. In June 2002, there were 896,000 users of the Napster application. (Note: even though the Napster free file-sharing service was largely out of service for a period of time, comScore Media Metrix continued to track when the software application was launched by consumers.)”
I find the fact that 900,000 people were still launching Napster a year after it shut down more remarkable than the peak usage numbers. Talk about touching a nerve!
