Down the shore

I’m spending a few days at my in-laws beach house on Long Beach Island, New Jersey. One thing I learned when I got married is that people on the West Coast go to “the beach,” but in the Northeast they go to “the shore.” In fact, at least in Philly, they go “down the shore.”

It’s surprising how many regionalisms like this survive, given how national our culture is and how mobile our population. The other day, we called a pizza delivery place to order some sandwiches. The guy at the other end of the line was mystified when we asked if they had “subs.” It was only when we used the proper Philly term, “hoagies,” that a reliable communications link was established. Guess I’ve got some things to get used to….
