The Internet Architecture Board and International Telecommunications Union have announced interim procedures for ENUM registration. No clue what ENUM is? I’m not surprised. It’s a standard for mapping telephone numbers (and other personal contact information) to Internet protocol numbers. In other words, connecting the addressing systems of telecom and the Net. ENUM might be a big deal, as significant for finding people as domain names are for finding Websites. If ENUM takes off, it could be a boost to IP telephony and new Net-based personal communications services. Or ENUM might wind up as a little-used beaurocratic footnote, like the X.400 directory standard. I could see it going either way….
